  • can I ask you a question?

it's after school on friday, i just waved off my kids for the weekend, and after the crowd has cleared, there remains one of my old kids last year.

    sure. what's up?

    what do girls like?

    oh. <smile> flowers?

    already did that.

    chocolates?

oh! i haven't done that yet. thanks!

i told v about the conversation and asked him what else i could have said. what else would a girl like? v was aghast --

marge, he's going to ask his dad for money! you should have said a card or something!

but honestly, if a girl doesn't like him...an 'i like you' card just seems cheesy. at least she'll have chocolate to eat. plus, i think he's already done the note already. in fact, he had asked his teacher to pass it along to her...

plus, v says, you're actually encouraging this??

well, at least i approve of the girl he likes. she's really nice, smart, hardworking, and athletic. thankfully he doesn't like the other girl that all the other fifth graders like -- a queen bee type.

was i wrong to have encouraged it?

    p.s. UTAH SUCKS!

  • Pop! goes my heart

so how's work going, you ask? well, pretty frustrating, to tell you the truth, thanks for asking.

some of my kids just seem like they're on the path straight to san quentin. stealing, lying, cheating, swearing (as explained to me by one student of what he's been hearing at lunch: "the v-word, se-word, the p-word...what's the p-word? well, you know...the pe-word...the per-word...the perv-word...ends with -ert...")

then there's the hormones. i was chatting with one of my old students after school today, and he told me how he was part of the "girl kissing club." apparently he earned his membership in first grade, after a gang of first grade girls jumped him and forced him to plant one on one of them. after i told him that he was much too young to be worrying about such things, he explained to me that "kissing a girl...makes you feel like...a MAN."

    oh BROTHER.

after i advised him to save these emotions for that special someone one day, he responded, "but mrs. chiang, you just got married last year -- i'll never be able to wait another 10 years! i can't even wait one more year!"

what this means for our future kids, i shudder to even think about.

and to think, he's only in FIFTH grade...you don't even want to know the kinds of "clubs" they have in middle school around here. makes you want to start praying for our kids right now, doesn't it?

  • After going through the job search books and thinking about running my own business, I have found a job. Thanks to What Color is Your Parachute, Get Hired Now, Competency Based Interviews, E-Myth Revisited, and Marge it only took me....like two months, which I am told is faster than normal. It is a disheartening thing graduating from college and then facing the reality that you go from 22 years of being a student and having a clear path to being unemployed and at the bottom of the totem pole..... again, only this time there is no clear pole to climb. It kinda felt like elementary to middle school, and then middle to high school. College didn't feel like that for me because your age or grade level didn't seem to matter as much so I didn't feel that much like a newbie. But finding work felt more life or death or something. So obviously that helped me to trust God during that time....which I really hope spills over to the "now I am not as in need, please help me to trust You everyday" period.

Well anyways, it is nice to have a job and not be marge's assistant teacher anymore, although it was nice to be so free. Now it's a 30 mile, 1 hour commute. I can't wait until we get those car pool lane stickers for the Prius, then it'll be cruising. The DMV is sooooo slow. I applied for those things like over 3 weeks ago and still haven't gotten em.

Been a long time since I posted and I don't expect to post more frequently because as the researchers said many american's are addicted to the internet. So...when you aren't surfing the web....

If any of you are interested in opening up a Subway in Santa Clara, Monterey, San Benito, or Santa Cruz come talk to me....we'll make it happen for you. A shameless plug for my new company, Subway.....Yes I am a sandwich....engineer.
